When is the best time to plant a new tree or shrub?

Trees and shrubs can be planted at any time during the year, however, there are optimal seasons and times to plant.

Spring is a great time to plant. It gives the tree or shrub an entire gorwing season to become established before winter sets in, and gets it started before the weather turns extreemly hot.

Bare-root trees and shrubs must be planted in spring because they are generally available only at that time, and are very sensitive to moisture loss. Planting a bare-root tree or shrub during the dryest parts of the year will lower the chances of its survival, and possibly stunt its growth.

Balled-and-burlapped trees and shrubs and plants in containers can usually be planted at any time, as long as the ground is not frozen.
