Tropical Gardening
Are you bored with traditional
annuals at the garden center?
Tropical gardening has made a
big comeback. Adding just a few
tropical plants into the flower border
will draw special attention to your
garden. In July and August, when
the temperature gets hot and dry
for long periods of time, traditional
garden plants tend to struggle.
Alternatively, a garden planted with
tropicals gets better as the season
progresses.
Many house plants - such as the
rubber tree, spider plant, and
pothos - can be placed outside
during the summer and make
excellent additions to your summer
garden. Tropicals can be planted in
pots or directly in the ground. Many
tropical’s can be dug up and brought
inside for the winter.
A few of our favorite tropicals
include: Caladium, Tropical
Hibiscus, Cana, and Alocasia
(commonly called elephant ears).
Most of these plants come in many
sizes and colors. As always, we
recommend purchasing these plants
from a reputable garden center.
Plants such as elephant ears can
be planted inside in containers and
placed outside after the threat of
frost has passed.
